Instinet share volume falls by about 40 percent

Friday April 5, 5:50 PM EST

NEW YORK, April 5 (Reuters) - Agency brokerage Instinet Group Inc. (INET), which runs an electronic stock trading network, on Friday said its share volume fell by about 40 percent in March.

Instinet, majority owned by global news and information provider Reuters Group Plc (RTR) (RTRSY), handled 4.77 billion shares on its network in March, down from 8.18 billion shares in March 2001. The firm handled 4.94 billion shares on its system in February.

The ongoing stock market slump has lessened investors' appetite for trading stocks, and cut into Instinet's volume.

Instinet's shares rose 34 cents, or 4.92 percent, to $7.25 on the Nasdaq Friday. The shares have traded between $6.77 and $21.75 since their public debut in May.
