Compaq Is Driving Storage Technology Innovation, Market Leadership

HOUSTON, Apr 8, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (CPQ) has won $900 million in new enterprise storage business since September 2001 -- shipping more than 63 Petabytes (PB) of storage capacity. Compaq says the company's strategy to expand its enterprise capabilities is driving increased momentum in the storage market in both customer demand and technology innovation across all major markets.

"Compaq has been relentless in its pursuit of innovations and standards that will make it easier than ever before for customers to maintain and manage the rapidly growing mountains of data that are so essential to business today," said Mike Winkler, Compaq executive vice president, Global Business Units. "Compaq's strong market share growth and new customer business in storage demonstrate that our efforts are paying off."

Open Technology Drives Customer Value

Compaq is delivering greater business value to enterprise and network storage customers through modular solutions based on open architecture and technology. "Open, modern technologies simplify storage infrastructure and make information management far easier," said Winkler. "This drives down costs for customers even as they have increased choice and flexibility."

Compaq's open, innovative storage technology enables automated data protection and life cycle data management, providing more efficient and effective use of storage resources throughout the enterprise.

Noting that many recent customer wins for Compaq storage include EMC displacements, Winkler said: "EMC must be very concerned about the future of their model. Their Symmetrix technology hasn't advanced appreciably in years and the marketplace is moving away from the legacy mainframe storage model -- it's just too expensive and too complicated to manage.

"On the other hand, Compaq's open storage model translates directly into a massive drop in the total cost of ownership that customers experience with other vendors, with a corresponding improvement in the customer's return on investment," he added.

Winkler also commented on the various storage tactics offered up by Dell Computer in recent years. "The very model that serves Dell well in the PC market is a model that lacks credibility as a competitor in storage. Dell has no native storage technology offerings of consequence, and the company lacks the significant in-house engineering capability needed to create one," Winkler noted.
