I will repeat what I've said before--there are no good answers, people are making this up as they go along, and the more honest and intelligent the observer the less confident they are about what can and should be done.

Spot on.. As I also stated, it's my opinion that much of what we call "foreign policy" amounts to exactly what we're seeing now.. people making hipshot decisions with the lives of millions of other people, as they engage in "crisis management"..

It has taken a crisis for this issue to really come this far to be resolved... Like so many other things associated with human interaction, we often leave things to the last minute, or until they reach the point of no longer being "ignorable"..

And that's why this thing can go either way... When decision makers, especially those being forced into the role of mediator/arbitrator as is the US, are required to intercede (or butt heads together), we'll go with whatever side appears to be offering the greatest concessions, or appears to be less obstinate. And right now, that's the Israelis.

So Arafat had better figure out if he really wants a Palestinian state, or if he wants a solution imposed from outside forces. Because the Israelis are currently using a hammer, but they have a olive branch in the other hand. Arafat has offered nothing but excuses and hollow words.
