What's obvious is:

1) The Israeli's will not and can not stop their military operation until it is completed.

2) The Bush administration knows that.

3) They also know that it is totally absurd to ask them to. We wouldn't do it. And they sure as hell aren't going to do it.

4) Bush's own political base at home supports the Israeli actions overwhelmingly.

Therefore it is entirely possible that those in the administration who understand what our war against Islam must consists of over the next 5-10 years have decided that Powell-for his part-does not, and that his obstructionism of victory must be minimalized. Therefore they have offered only token resistance to his incredibly stupid ideas of kissing every Arab ass in the Mid East and expecting them to return that favor by changing their murderous nature.

Powell's mission will fail because of the millenia-old fundamental reality that the peace table cannot reverse the results established on the battlefield. The Israeli's will continue their operation whether Powell comes or goes. Powell will return to Washington and keep a low profile until his resignation after the Bush re-election in 2004. Then he will be replaced by a true war-time Secretary of State (probably Rice).
