Actually, ethanol reduces mileage because it contains less energy per volume. IF you have a modern automobile you will always gets less mileage with ethanol under the same conditions.

The EPA says the reduction is small, like 3%, but in CT MTBE reduces mileage by 10%. Oh, and MTBE increases pollution, both air and water. Ethanol may not reduce mileage by that much, but it will reduce mileage.

Another, bigger problem with ethanol is that it cannot be practically shipped - it has to be trucked or tanked - it cannot go by pipeline because of its affinity for water.

Oh, ethanol is also a boondoggle. It takes more energy to produce and ship ethanol than the ethanol is worth, i.e., it's production is a net energy consumer.
