1/ King Hussein did not attack, or intended to attack Israel in 67. Israel "included" him in the fight, and won. The intersting telephone conversation aired on the first night of the war,(mossad) between Nasser and Hussein, clearly demonstrate it too, if need be, when Hussein finally agrees to Nasser request that he states that US airmen helped the Israeli on that day. ( He never fully recovered from that lie.)
Do you have a source for that? I have this vague recollection of stories of cooked communications between Egypt and Jordan, but I couldn't find much when I looked it up recently. Did Bramford write about it in Puzzle Palace?
2/ When Hussein accepted to let go of his West Bank, it is under full pressure of all main Arab nations, in Rabat, Morocco, early eighties. Arafat is there too, and inherits his rights. Hussein had no choice but to bow, even if it was the best for his nerves. Not for Israel, as it is obvious now.
I imagine passing the West Bank back to Jordan would have been tough after Black September, which was fairly early on, . |
