(NYSE: CPQ - news) today announced the availability of the industry's first PCI-X Array Controller, designed to deliver faster and more reliable management and protection of data stored on multiple hard drives. The Smart Array 5312 Controller (SA-5312) provides higher levels of performance and fault tolerance to help meet customers' critical business needs. The innovative SA-5312, which is optimized for PCI-X based Compaq ProLiant servers, also provides twice the bandwidth of standard 66MHz PCI bus architectures and offers performance memory for improved reliability. The SA-5312 is easy to upgrade through a unique modular cache design, allowing customers to double the on-board battery-backed write cache from the standard 128MB to an industry- leading 256MB.
An array controller is an intelligent storage hardware device in a server that directs the flow of data to disk drives to ensure optimal data management performance across an array of drives, and provide data protection by managing the retention of data in the event of a disk drive failure.
