Jacob & Cary,
One thing you miss. After the six day war in 1967 it did not have to be inevitable that Israel would occupy and semi-colonize portions of the west bank. Nobody ever heard about Judea and Samaria until then. What may have started out innocently enough as a way to pressure the Arabs to come to the peace table, turned into a substantive change in the zionist view or perhaps a return to a more fundamentalist zionist view. It is a paradox for a country to be both democratic and perceived as an oppressor. Given the facts on the ground however, terrorism must be defeated first, then perhaps the Saudi plan with recognion, (nothing less will do) and with modifications that protect Israel at it most vulnerable points(ie border adjustments, dmz, nato/us troops etc) could work. I mentioned yesterday and I got no response that perhaps what Israel is doing is paving the way for this outcome in its assault with tacit american support as well as a blink an a nod from moderate arab states(MAS). I know that cary says MAS is an oxymoron and i agree but if they were to make this leap to line up against terrorism(which ultimately is a greater threat to them than to anyone else) there may be a future after all. mike
PS How come cary buys into the concept of evil when israel is involved but ridicules bush when he does.
