Cary-- Sadly, Sharon certainly knew of the Christian militias slaughter during the massacre, I don't think it was established what he knew before. However, he damn well knew the militia did not enter the camps to give away cookies!

Altho I am convinced that Sharon has made thinks worse, it is not clear whether anyone can bring peace. Again, the Barak proposal was more than I thought could be offered politically, and Arafat did not respond to it. You are correct that there are strong forces in the Arab--especially Palestinian-- world who want the destruction of Israel, and Arafat has one foot in that camp. I personally get pissed when the same people who were silent about Assad's slaughter of 30,000 Syrians in Hama deplore Israel's provoked incursion. I know one survivor. They also seem to forget that Egypt and Jordan invaded and annexed Palestinian land after the '48 war. There is no concern for Palestinian aspirations within the Mideast. However, I still stand by my statement that Sharon doesn't have the diplomatic skill to make peace. He led to disaster in Lebanon and needlessly provoked the intifada with his visit to the Dome Mosque.

BTW, I am not proud of my conduct in Germany in '57. Indeed, after many visits to Germany, I am fond of the country and the people. What is annoying is how well things work there!
