I don't think its about celibacy or even homosexuality so much as control..... Humans are humans and a certain percentage will succumb to temptation. Priests are in a unique position of trust and faith. The combination of these factors is a pernicious mix.

There is however no excuse for the Church hierarchy's action with regard to Fr. Shanley (who was in my parish when I was a young man -- I remember him but was not active in the church during his short tenure ) if his advocacy of sex with children was known. In fact, given Cardinal Law's affirmative acts to cover for Fr. Shanley, I'm inclined to agree with those who call for him to be put on trial (criminal) as well.
