<<Burning more oil. The alcohol production consumes energy, more than the product is worth. That's why no company will make ethanol w/o government subsidy.>>

Ethanol is an alcohol produced from grains, with corn being the major grain source for its production. Ethanol fuels are traditionally blended with the gasoline in a mixture containing 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. Every time ethanol is added to gasoline, it displaces non-renewable crude oil. For every barrel of ethanol used at the refinery, up to two barrels of crude oil can be saved. It is estimated that if every driver used ethanol-blended gasoline, the United States could reduce oil imports by one million barrels per day. That savings converts to about $600 million per year. Presently, the United States uses roughly one billion gallons of ethanol per year.
