Wind River Expands Support For Voice-Over-IP Networks; Introduces Sigtran Protocol Suite for Softswitches, Gateways, and VoIP Servers
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 2002--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today announced the addition of Signaling Transport (Sigtran), a telecom signaling protocol, to its WindNet(TM) suite of networking protocols. With the addition and integration of Sigtran into the current suite of WindNet products, Wind River is able to offer the industry's most complete voice-over-IP (VoIP) solution, enabling the rapid development of advanced, converged telecom products such as softswitches, media gateways, wireless infrastructure systems and VoIP servers. WindNet Sigtran enables VoIP network equipment to access the Signaling System 7 (SS7) network across an IP network, minimizing the need for direct connections to the SS7 network.

Sigtran and other technologies supporting the distributed voice and data network serve as the foundation for future converged communications networks. According to research firm Frost and Sullivan, converged voice/data equipment revenues were $1.39B in 2000, and are projected to reach $14B by 2006. This growth in the market for converged networks is further supported by the decreasing bandwidth requirements carriers are seeing for transmitting voice messages over an IP network as the performance of speech compression technologies continue to improve.
The modular architecture of WindNet Sigtran allows developers to select needed components based on specific application requirements. The scalability of WindNet Sigtran makes it applicable for a variety of infrastructure equipment applications within the distributed network architecture that is the foundation for VoIP services. In addition, these WindNet protocols are closely coupled with development tools found in Wind River's Tornado(R) integrated development environment, the VxWorks(R) and VxWorks AE real-time operating systems, and the recently released BSD/OS(R) 4.3 operating system.
