groan, I can't believe I'm going to share this here

but

g'parents had these huge stone crocks - that they would fill every fall with pickles and such

and sour cabbage - the German equivalent of sauer kraut

after they would slaw the cabbage, I would be put in a tub and scrubbed till my little legs and feet were raw, then rinsed and rinsed and rinsed - then carried over to the stone crocks to 'dance' on the cabbage while it soaked in the brine

we're not talking ballet here ;)
