I was a Verizon customer. Had two phone lines. Then RCN came along and offered phone service. So, I kept one Verizon line and converted other line to RCN at a $2/month saving. Then RCN offered cable modem service. Still needed and retain 2 phone lines since RCN only offered 1 way cable modem service. Two weeks ago, RCN came through and did the final digital neiborhood upgrade. I got 2 way cable modem, and the RCN phone line was converted to a high speed "mips" phone service over the cable tv wire. The RCN mips phone line was outstanding. Decided to try dial-up on it. Before the upgrade Verizon and RCN phone only connected at 26-28kbs. The RCN Mips phone line connected at 50kbs!!!
So, I tell all my condo neighbors who have compained about the poor underground Verizon lines and slow connect speeds, and they all call and convert to RCN Mips lines, replacing Verizon service! I waited 1 month to see how everything worked and I had Verizon disconnect the service. Few years ago I had 2 Verizon lines at about $42/month. Now I have one RCN phone line over the CATV(RCN used to pay Verizon for use of the Verizon lines previously) and a 2 way cable modem....and I pay Verizon $0/month. So.....maybe thats why the Bells are getting nailed....and I bet its going on in many many neighborhoods across the East.
