April 10, 2002 09:07:00 AM ET

FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2002--Xybernaut (R)Corporation XYBR today announced that the Honorable Jim Gilmore, former Governor of Virginia, has been appointed to Xybernaut's corporate Board of Directors.

Gilmore, who is currently chairman of the Congressional Advisory Panel to Assess Weapons of Mass Destruction and Domestic Response, recently participated as a keynote speaker at the 7th annual International Conference on Wearable Computing (ICWC) where he discussed technology's role in reviving the U.S. and global economies.

"I'm pleased to have the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors for Xybernaut, a company that I believe is on the verge of revolutionizing the way businesses and individuals interact with data and information," Gilmore said. "Wearable computing is an emerging new technology that is already impacting the bottom line of companies like FedEx, Bell Canada and Boeing by making their workers more efficient. I believe wearable computing is here now, not only in the corporate market, but also in education, government and with consumers."

"Xybernaut is in the enviable position of being the gateway to the wearable computing market," added Gilmore. "The company is the recognized intellectual capital leader in wearable computing with more than 700 patents granted or pending worldwide."

"Jim's commitment and leadership in the areas of electronic commerce, national defense, anti-terrorism, security and law enforcement make him a strong addition to the Xybernaut Board," said Edward G. Newman, chairman, president, and CEO of Xybernaut.

"Jim is a strategic addition to our Board. His experience and relationships at the regional, national and international levels will be an asset to Xybernaut in many ways as we continue to enhance our position as the leader in wearable and related technologies," Newman added.

A native of Virginia, Gilmore received an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 1971. After a three-year tour as a U.S. Army counterintelligence agent in West Germany, he entered the University of Virginia Law School, graduating in 1977.

After working for a decade in community service and as a lawyer in private practice, he was elected Commonwealth's Attorney in his home county of Henrico, VA in 1987 and 1991. He was elected Virginia Attorney General in 1993 and Governor in 1997. Gilmore's career includes a variety of leadership and management positions, including chairman of the national Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce and chairman of the Republican National Committee.
