That is one reason why it is necessary not to force the pace of change, but allow non- Western, traditionalist societies some breathing space to adapt to the modern world........


One problem with the mantra of "tradition" is the failure in the broader culture to distinguish between the principle and its manifestation and between salient traditions and incidental traditions. Thus we end up with an apparent equivalency between, say, the liberty icon and football-prayer icon. If we would isolate the salient elements of this tradition and foster them, the pace of change could be increased and the disruption decreased. Traditionalists seem to have too much reverence for the "stuff" that surrounds the principle.
