The US army was planning to invade Kyushu (southmost of the Japanese Home islands) in 1946. They were estimating 1 million American casualties and far higher Japanese casualties. The Japanese were at this time arming their women and children with bamboo stakes and exhorting them to fight to the death.

You can make a good case that the two atomic bombs saved lives.
