| It is one of the most beautiful spots on the Earth, from the Blue Ridge Mountains down to the Bay. The District itself, although it has its slums, is a very attractive city. One of the most beautiful areas in any city is the National Mall, from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. It has the best complex of museums in the world, the Smithsonian museums and the National Gallery. It has the best regional theater in the United States, the Arena Stage, one of the great Shakespearean theaters (the Folger's Landsburg theater), and fine venues at the National Theater, the Warner, and the Kennedy Center. The National Symphony is a world class orchestra. It has a good quotient of urban diversity, so that one can find not only fine French restaurants, but plenty of delis, Indian and Thai, Greek and Middle Eastern, and even Irish restaurants. Capitol Hill has become a very nice area, although still too crime ridden, the Southwest waterfront is still lovely, and Georgetown and the West End are beautiful commercial and residential areas. I will stop now, figuring that this will make little impression on you anyway......... |
