The cause of the increased death rate associated with asthma and specifically the use of higher doses of albuterol is not entirely clear. It seems to me that the association is with all beta agonists, and that it most likely results from the increased use of albuterol and other beta agonists when the asthma is worsening.
I really cannot see that the FDA would come close to pulling albuterol because of safety reasons. The truth is is that is really a pretty safe drug. I mean, you can get much more toxic bronchodilators over the counter in the form of primatine mist!!!
I think that success with levalbuterol will come if they market it well with a "new and improved" label. I think that that will most likely require a partner in the form of a big pharma company Dan
