I'm not sure that announcement of a vapor product from HP is a reason to run. Perhaps someone should see just what this UNC technology amounts to.

The UNC stuff has been published and I remember reading that HP had
taken a financial stake in the project over a year ago. I'm sure SGI's competitive analysts have long been aware of the technology and that SGI is working on something to come up with comparable performance. HP's stuff won't ship until early next year, at the earliest, so SGI has a fair amount of time to finish whatever competitive products they are working on.

'm not sure that HP will be able to get many to line up and pay $100,000 for a random homework project.

Well, SGI is doing the same with their Cellular Irix on their high-end systems. It's just a derivative of the Stanford Hive project. Lots of good stuff come out of the schools (though a lot of junk has come out of them as well, witness mach).
