Even if the merger squeaks through, at this point it seems tainted.

I'd said before that the main reason for the merger might be so that Carly could get herself out of the operational role of president. In two years, when the merger hasn't produced any significant results (at best), then she could fire Capellas and spend another two to three years coasting in the CEO role while a new president was hired and tried to make something happen.

At this point, however, I agree that she's linked quite closely with the merger, and while two years is a long time for some people's memories, I don't believe she'll get a free pass any longer if it doesn't produce tangible results rather quickly. Going forward, I expect the press will continue to use the words "Fiorina" and "HP/CPQ merger" in the same sentence for quite a while.
