Free only wins if certain terms are met, like:

- It is needed.
- It is known that this free product it fulfills the needs.
- It works in your current environment and is easy to get.

The main reason why Linux isn't more deployed, is because some of these terms are not met. In 5 years, there will still be lots of people around where these terms are not met. But there will also be lots of people where the terms ARE met. And the last one is the interesting one, because it reduces Microsoft to be "just another proprietary platform" like Apple and Sun.

I am one of those producing for open-source (although only very little), and I do it for several reasons:

1) To learn new technologies. I can produce some stuff and afterwards say: "I did this" as a reference.
2) To learn how things are done in open-source.
3) To make products be more the way I want them to.

There are many reasons why people spend their time on open-source, but I have never seen a survey where "because I don't like Microsofts products or dominance" was an answer by more than 10% of those responding.
