Re: Powell : "Friendship between Israel and US can never be broken." Got the message, Gus ?
Dammit... you won't give up, eh? Sure, it can never be broken... yet it can be SPOILED or SUSPENDED albeit temporarily.
Then again, Powell knows that he's not welcome in Israel... Jackboot Israelis would have preferred to deal with Cheney but the Veep reached his diplomatic "Peter ceiling" (*) during his dud tour in the region a few weeks ago --tough shit! Anyway, the point is that Powell must tame the Israeli hardliners in the first place before anything substantial can be achieved. He can't botch it right away by vexing both the Israelis and their stooges back in the US.
You'd better not count your chickens yet, though... Arafat is quietly waiting for his "Warholian 15-minutes fame" tomorrow. Indeed, tomorrow, after Arafat will have met with the US Secretary of State, both of them will hold a press conference and Arafat will eventually deliver his call for a cease-fire in Arabic. Get the picture? Arafat will offer his cease-fire speech TO THE US DIPLOMACY in exchange for the Powell encounter, not to arrogant Israelis... At that point, the ball will be with PM Sharon: what will Sharon's next move be then? Oh! Idiot that I'm... Of course, I know how that screwup Sharon will react --he'll botch it again! Sharon will deride Arafat's pledge of goodwill as yet another treachery, another lie, another perfidy to gain time!!
