Fighting continued in the Jenin refugee camp on Friday amid claims the Israeli army had killed hundreds of Palestinians in the camp, scene of the heaviest battles since Israel launched its offensive two weeks ago.

Palestinians have called for a United Nations investigation and accused Israel of massacring civilians in the northern West Bank refugee camp.

Kofi Annan, UN secretary general, said the time had come to send in an international force to alleviate the humanitarian situation.

"The situation is so dangerous and the humanitarian and human rights situation so appalling, the proposition that a force should be sent in there... can no longer be deferred," he said.
