I believe on thing that is missing today that we had last year was optimism in the ability of the Fed to prevent a downturn. There is a ton of pessimism in the market due to the various Enron/accounting issues. I see that as a big impediment to a strong rally and even a moderate one as well.

We need something to give false hope and false confidence in the recovery.
