ok, had some nice conversation with the CEO of IPAG (Germany) and the IR director of Multilink. The more I dig up the fine print details the more I like it..

With their IPAG investment and partnership, MLTC now has access to a "friendly" high.end InP fab for sweet $$$. MLTC is in a better bargaining position vs. IPAG than it was with IBM regarding SiGe.. From my conversation with MLTC'S IR dptmt. I inferred that upcoming Gigabit Ethernet products could easily use photodiodes from IPAG.. Future monolithic integration projects will combine the receiver with InP based electronics on the same chip using monolithic integration thus avoiding the highly-problematic 40Gbit+ interconnection issue..

While MLTC is basically fabless they have access to a "friendly" high end InP fab in which they have some equity stake while not having to support all the expenditure of the startup IPAG. Their exclusive access to IPAG's receiver products is another area that sets MLTC apart from its better known competitors, not enjoying a semi-captive source for detectors tied into their operations. The only mosaic of the puzzle missing is a VCSEL architecture, best would be one that lends itself to InP integration. Maybe one of the next PRs will feature such an announcement. According to IPAG, their technology would allow the integration of a VSEL product. It's just too far apart from their own R&D focus. That means MLTC has to bring this to the table on its own. IF they land a VCSEL deal then MLTC has all the ingredients that make up a transceiver and transponder including electronics.
