Good point, forgotten by the current crop of cheerleaders.

The momentum of war-mongering carries along with it the vast resources of the profiteers, both financial and political.
It's damn good business, this time around a trillion dollars or more, and keeps you elected, if you don't get caught in a scandal.

Afterwards comes the rewriting of history in press and schoolbooks for justifications, and if possible, destruction of incriminating evidence to the contrary.
Fortunately, this last step will likely be more difficult in the digital age.
