places me left of center
Yeah, that was my response. I was wondering where "center" was. Now to be honest, I didn't weight anything, which was an option. If I went back and answered these weighted, I wonder if I'd get something different?
Another observation was that many of these questions were binary propositions, forcing an unnatural, either-or selection process (like "should SS be saved." My response would be, how much would it cost and would the private sector use it as an opportunity to rip me off!)
Registering guns could be, for example, replaced with an effective point-of-sale identification system. I've argued (believe it or not) that a waiting period for someone who already owns guns (like me) does nothing to promote anyone's safety. That is a pretty rational proposition. However, I also agree that there are a lot of other people I don't want to have guns. The thing that promotes others safety (vis-a-vis, my gun ownership) is that a) I've owned guns my whole life, b) I'm not a violent criminal, c) I'm able to hold a job, d) I've never used guns in a threatening way.
I generally haven't found these surveys to be particularly insightful. Over on Solon's SGBR thread I took a religion selector. It had me in some weird category that sounded like I was wearing beads and hugging trees. I can tell you now that I've never worn beads while hugging trees. I hug trees naked like everyone should. |
