Cooperation might lower quantities of tools shipped and the prices of these tools, but it also might significantly decrease the cyclicality of the industry. The companies would be more profitable but the stockholders would be boring LTB&Hs. Reductio Ad Absurdum would require a consideration of the situation where all semi manufacturers share one large fab. I suspect that there would only be two or three vendors of each tool.
