Good points, Carl. But I was trying to make a different point. It seems to me the Vietnam war was the time of media discovery; that, after that, the civilian and military leadership of countries waged war not only with the media in mind but actually deployed it as part of their strategy. I must confess that the first time that thought occurred to me was the Gulf War.

But the implications of that are significantly explored in Michael Ignatieff's body of work.
