The gap between the rich and poor widened in the 90's. The top 5% share of income rose during the 90's and stabilized at 21%. The lowest 40% share of income declined during the 90's and stabilized at 14%.

As you correctly stated you are "no expert". The better thought is "Who Killed the Middle Class"
