Mike (and Jerome)-
The tension is mounting and it is unfortunate. I loved the pluralism of NY, and now we are feeling suspicion of differences. There will be a big pro-Israel rally in DC on Monday that my son will attend, and I hope it doesn't become a target.
A critical question whether the terrorists can be controlled, and if so, by whom?
However, the settlements and the force necessary to protect them is dumb incitement by the Israelis. Kissinger was on TV and emphasized that negotiations with terrorism only legitimizes its use as an instrument of policy. The Palestinians believe, I think correctly, that without terrorism, Israel would not consider removing the settlements. Now the question is how can diplomacy be divorced from terrorism. Powell has quite a task.
Also, Jerome, I did overreact. Part of my overreaction is my perception that the mideast is allowing latent antisemitism to become manifest. Also, most Jews do share a "never again" mentality. Altho Israel is hardly above criticism (and you know that I oppose Sharon), there is still a different moral standard for Israel than Palestine. Please don't be inhibited about presenting a different viewpoint. We need legitimate controversy.
