Not nearly as well as you are, but probably OK.

There is a lot of potential benefit for us in comparing notes, although at this point, you may be the teacher and I the student.

I am up 1.3% ytd. It went like this.

40% is in Cambiar Value. They are up 0.1%.
30% is in Kayne Anderson Growth At Reasonable Price. They are up 7.5%
25% is in bonds. Up 2.6%
5% is in Lazard International. Down 0.1%

I would be up about 3%, averaging these numbers, but I was in something called Insight Aggressive Growth, which lost 16% in about seven weeks before I dumped them.

Up 1.3% is better than many indexes. Its just the Value Line Arithmetic Index that torments me, being up 17.7%. I keep wondering why, with all these smart money people out there looking for a way to make money, why nobody can make an index fund that mimics the VLAI. valueline.com

How did you do so well? Is your portfolio anticipating a flat or bear market? Of is it just managers outperforming their benchmarks? My bonds and Kayne Anderson have some growth orientation, though not overly so. Are you trying to time general trends in the market (i.e. avoiding growth) or are you not doing any timing? The guy from Smith Barney forecast that growth would outperfom value, but my wife and I did not believe him enough to continue any pure growth investments. Would you mind posting your asset allocation and the breakdowns on the returns in each?

Thanks,
Tom
