Yep! I used to be a Dream Theater fan, though I've gotten farther away from that style of music in the past few years. Not sure if they've already found it, but they'd probably really dig Liquid Tension Experiment. It's a side project from a few of the members of Dream Theater with some other folks. The same flavor of music, but a different vibe.
I've gone from being very into Dream Theater-type stuff, which is a lot of times very technical virtuosity oriented, to the blues, which is still involved in the skill aspect, but has a lot more feeling in it most times, to relishing the purity of the "Three chords played with conviction" punk philosophy. Where I've ended up is a place where I can appreciate and enjoy all of the above.
Oh, and to plug an amazing bass guitarist.. Victor Wooten. He's delightful. If you'd like, download his song "More Love" for yourself. It's just a wonderful song, and has a sweet, simple melody that I find myself humming all of the time... La... la la la... la la la.. la la la.... ;) Two others are his rendition of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and his own "Sometimes I Laugh".. the latter is just amazingly beautiful.
Oh, and let your sons hear the Victor Wooten song "A Show of Hands" and tell them that it was played on a 4 string bass with no overdubs whatsoever. It should blow them away quite nicely in a "How in the world did he DO that??" kind of Dream Theater way. ;)
