It's so funny how people like different things. We saw that before Christmas and thought it was one of the worst movies ever and mostly because the dialogue was so awful- vulgar, sophomoric, and contrived. We just squirmed through the whole thing. But I like people, and warmth, and Mamet is about (supposedly) dialogue, and is dark and really pretty mysogynistic (is that a word?). There was no one to like in that film. I was delighted when I thought everyone was going to die in the end. Personally for really funny one liners I'd rather read your and E's quotes!
Ammo was in an Evening of David Ives this spring, a collection of Ives' sketches. If you haven't seen anything by him and get a chance, he's very funny, (Ives not Ammo, though of course, I think Ammo's very funny too, and hope you get to see him someday!) and he's very gifted with words. One of the sketches was a parody of Mamet. EVery other word was f**k and there were unfinished sentences and fragments, and repeated phrases. The characters were all crude and awful. It was really funny if you know Mamet.
We went to Brotherhood of the Wolf last night. Our dollar theatre has reopened, so we can now see all these movies without feeling as if we're risking a housepayment on an unknown. (Our movies now charge 8.00) I am still trying to recover. What a movie! I loved it, not because I think it was a great movie at all, but because it was just so much fun- I felt assaulted. It was like seeing five movies at once. Something for everyone. It was so over-the-top, you had to laugh. So I guess I recommend it. |
