Newsitem 09 July:
UNIVEC is Sole Supplier of Auto-Destruct Syringes to Americares for 500th Mission of Operation Hope
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (July 9) BUSINESS WIRE -July 9, 1997--UNIVEC (NASDAQ: UNVC) reported today that it was the sole supplier of auto-destruct syringes flown to the former Soviet Union as part of the State Department's 500th mission of Operation Provide Hope.
Some 500,000 syringes were sold to Americares, a private disaster relief organization, which in turn included the units in the shipment.
In a recent letter to UNIVEC regarding its participation in this and other relief efforts, Ariela Bianchi of Americares said, "... Amer- icares can always count on UNIVEC for support. In addition to your assistance in the milestone Operation Provide Hope mission, UNIVEC syringes and needles will be sent to answer a request for help from the newly formed Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). In the past UNIVEC has supported Americares missions to Rwanda, Azerbajan and Vietnam.
"The auto-destruct, non reusable syringes from UNIVEC are perfect for helping preventing the spread of disease.Recent WHO statistics claim 50% of vaccines delivered and administered through the Ministry of Health have not been effective, specifically because of the reuse of disposable syringes. However, when sending UNIVEC syringes on humanitarian missions, Americares can be assured that all medicines will be used to their fullest effectiveness..."
In commenting on this accomplishment, Joel Schoenfeld, chairman and CEO of UNIVEC said, "Our participation in this and other similar programs is part of the mission statement announced at the time we went public this past April -- to deploy a portion of our resources to the promotion of the use of safe, non-reusable syringes throughout the world in order to prevent the spread of communicable diseases through the reuse of contaminated syringes." UNIVEC manufactures and distributes a line of auto-destruct syringes designed to prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B through the reuse of contaminated syringes.
