This same notion came up when I discussed this proposition with the spousal unit. She said the same thing as you did, to which I said, "Imagine how stupid they would have been if they didn't play football."

I think of more finely tuned and precise type of athlete (kung fu, gymnastics) and the people that I knew. Frequently there are the Brainiac genre of intelligeek, but this too is a stereotype. Studies have shown that physical conditioning aids academic study. Brainiacs would perform even better with some exercise.
