QUALCOMM Announces On-Time Sampling of Entry-Level Zero IF 3G CDMA2000 1X Chipset and System Software
radioOne MSM6000 Chipset and System Software Supports Voice- and SMS-Centric Devices for CDMA Markets
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 2002-- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - news), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the on-time sample shipment of the radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (Zero IF) MSM6000(TM) chipset solution, including the MSM6000 Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software, RFT6100(TM), RFR6000(TM) and RFL6000(TM) transmit and receive chips, the PM6000(TM) power management chip, and the accompanying Subscriber Unit Reference (SURF(TM)) development platform. The radioOne MSM6000 chipset leverages the cost advantages of Zero IF with a reduction in cost, component count and Printed Circuit Board area (PCB). Providing backward compatibility and voice-capacity benefits of third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X, the MSM6000 is targeted for voice- and Short Message Service (SMS)-centric handsets.

QUALCOMM's radioOne ZIF architecture eliminates the need for all IF components -- IF integrated circuits (ICs), IF Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters, voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs), and Phase Lock Loops (PLLs) -- thereby reducing printed circuit board (PCB) area and Bill of Materials (BOM) for future wireless handsets and other devices. In addition, only one external ultra high frequency (UHF) single-band VCO is required for all CDMA frequency bands worldwide.

``The expansion of 3G CDMA2000 1X technology worldwide, with its inherent capacity advantages over competing technologies, has created a growing demand for entry-level CDMA handsets as part of an overall product and services segmentation strategy by operators,'' said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. ``QUALCOMM's MSM6000 chipset and system software will enable handset manufacturers and operators to deliver low-cost handsets targeting voice, basic data and SMS-centric users.''

The MSM6000 solution will allow manufacturers and operators to meet the needs of entry-level subscribers who initially require only voice and basic data capabilities. The MSM6000 chipset and system software supports two-way SMS applications and data rates of up to 14.4 kilobits per second (kbps), and is compliant with IS-2000 Release 0, which addresses the key attribute of CDMA2000 network voice capacity improvements over previous generation technologies. The flexibility of CDMA2000 1X deployments allows operators to segment their products and, when needed, migrate these entry-level subscribers to higher-tier 3G terminals within the same network. Additional product information for the MSM6000 solution is available at cdmatech.com.
