I wonder if anyone has thoughts about this...

The frequent freezes and crashes I wrote about here many weeks ago have been increasing, and yesterday Gateway tech support went through a lengthy test with me, and listened over the phone to the sounds my tower is emitting, and at the end advised me to back up everything important immediately.

I backed up as much as I could. I guess I'll lose the hundreds of emails unless I save them one at a time, which is too much. Oh well.

Anyway, the tech person said that what would happen next is either than they would take me through "writing zeros," which is cleaning off the hard drive and starting fresh.

Or they'd send someone to install a new one. (This computer is under a year old and I have a five year extended warranty.)

A friend PM'd me that he thought I should demand a new computer.

Does anyone have thoughts about this, or has anyone had a similar experience, esp. with Gateway?

I feel uncomfortable about keeping a hard drive that has already created so many problems.

Also, a new hard drive comes with various programs already installed. If we "write zeros," won't I have to install everything myself?

Does anyone think it's worth trying to ask for a whole new computer? (I've had this a little under a year.)

Any comments would be welcome.
