tv,

As Americans we always like to support the underdog.

Traditionally that is the Jewish state - 5 million against several hundred million Arabs (worldwide 16 million vs 1.2 billion).

However, Israeli treatment of the occupied territories has many of us questioning their judgement (and their sanity). Lets be clear - I in no way support terrorism - but think that Israeli policies in creating and supporting settlements has spawned the Intafada.

A lot has been made on this thread about how these issues play in American politics (such as recent Democratic party speaches). How about Israeli?

Their multi-party system holds many governments captive to the ultra-orthodox and extremist parties. These clearly proclaim an Israeli 'right' to the West Bank and Gaza.

These parties and organizations on the Israeli side are as much a problem as the Hamas.

A Jordanian friend of mine (now a US citizen) has spoken to me of an uncles olive farm. Been in the family for over 200 years - recently buldozed.

Why? Clear line of site was required by an adjacent settlement for security.

As pro-Israeli as I have always felt - these issues have made me start thinking beyond blind faith in the Israeli position.

Also as a father of 2 teenage son's I really worry about our volunteering a peacekeeping force. The extremism displayed by both sides seems to preclude any real chance of peace...

Just some thoughts,

John
