What were the Medieval wars of Europe except an extension of rivalries and conflicts between former barbarian tribal entities (saxons, normans, anglos, vikings.... etc)??

The difference is that the power structure of the middle east was radically altered after WW1, if not actually imposed from above by the British and French.

And if you look at such influential states as Saudi Arabia, you'll see that it's ruled by essentially an extended family engaging in inter-family power struggles that rival those of Europe and many other less established societies.

And for those who recall I, and apparently now some others, are comparing this the situation in the mid-east to sort of an Islamic "reformation", where secular interests begin to dominate the predominantly religious power structure.

And given that Muslim religious power is in the hands of a scholar class, and not a heirarchical clergy, the extremists are banding together out of fear of losing their power and prestige over their "flocks".
