IBM and Novell cut deal for NDS

Novell announced today that it has licensed Novell Directory Services (NDS) to IBM. IBM
plans to release NDS running on its RS/6000 systems later this quarter and with its S/390
systems early next year, both at no charge to users. IBM has also licensed NDS add-ons
that Novell has developed -- such as its directory-to-directory replication technology -- as
well as Novell file and print services for resale to its users.

Analysts acknowledged that Novell is succeeding in its strategy to have NDS available on all
major platforms: the deal with IBM follows similar relationships with Hewlett-Packard,
Fujitsu, Sun, and SCO. However, Dan Kuznetsky, an analyst for International Data Corp.,
in Framingham, Mass., emphasized that wide availability is not necessarily indicative of
acceptance by users.

"Just because a company has a product for a platform doesn't mean that people have
actually bought it and installed it," Kuznetsky said.

Novell Inc., in Orem, Utah, can be reached at (888) 321-4272 (toll-free) or
novell.com.
