Good point..the key one I think..The dollar has been in a long term constant state of devaluation that necessitates interest being paid to those who lend it so as to compensate them for this predicatable loss of purchasing power. The lending of gold carries a much lower rate of interest because it is not subject to the same rate of loss of value, except when manipulated lower for political purposes.
