Yes, it's arbitrary.

"Ouch. ... Is it just me or does SI's TOU enforcement seem rather… arbitrary?"

In my many years on the Net, I've run into this "moderation" or "censorship" problem many times. While maybe well-intentioned, most censorship regimes rapidly degenerate into quixotic exercises in "I'mgonna _tell_ on you!" and "But _he_ started it!" behavior.

And the censors who rule from afar are usually the worst. Thus we have the spectacle of SI's chief censor--who I am assuming is "SI Administrator Jeff," as his is the only name we ever see--stepping in to suspend Elmer for what are relatively mild comments by the standards of other threads. (Yeah, maybe Mani's thread is more censorious than most...but this means it should be Mani and His Gang doing the censoring, flawed though their popularity contest style of voting may be, not "SI Administrator Jeff" holding Elmer to a higher standard of behavior than is routinely seen on other threads.

It boils down to who narcs out the others. "I'm gonna _tell_!"

Meanwhile, free passes are handed out to those who lie about leaking insider information, who make false claims that people were fired from their jobs for misconduct, and so on.

If Steve Harrris or NiceGuy or Win Smith or Bacchus makes these kinds of slurs, here on the Mind Control AMD thread, nothing happens. But if Intel supporters defend themselves, Mani announces that "a vote has been called."

Hilarious.
