When in Sharon's career was there a time for diplomacy? All I have ever seen is provocation and military solutions to diplomatic issues.

You forget.. Sharon was rightfully elected over other opposition parties. Sharon has been fighting to retain power by meeting the pressures being put upon him to create security in the country. The Israeli public themselves put him in power and are keeping him there (if only because few other Israeli politicians desire to replace, Netanyahu not-withstanding)

His return to politics did not happen in a vacuum, and Arafat if VERY MUCH to blame for his political resurrection.

As for Arafat, he might be "elected", but since he faced little organized opposition, we can really call it a free and fair election.
