He's right on many points of course, the choices are exactly that hard .... remember the White Paper [unfortunate colour that] from early in the Trudeau government, with Chrétien in Indian Affairs, how that was about fast-track assimilation, abolishing the Indian Act which indians themselves had good reason to loathe, granting lands to individuals in fee simple, and getting the federal government out of their lives? ... that's what kicked off the last few years, dramatic reaction to that approach
Demographics lean heavy in favour of it, though ... rest of us won't abide two classes of citizen ... so where do you start talking, where is the common ground? ... not so easy to see, looks like we'll be many a year discussing the issue, then pass it on to the grandchildren to solve ... in the meantime, marry each other's sisters, that'll work |
