GE didn't provide a fair comparison (contrary to a rebuttal of the NY Times article) of consolidated earnings
in the recent quarterly report: biz.yahoo.com

The report mentions that per-share amounts before accounting
changes (in dollars) diluted earnings per share were $0.35 and $0.30 for Mar 2001 and Mar 2000 respectively.
The 0.35 number excludes amortization expenses (per
the accounting change), but the 0.30 includes it!
Excluding the change, the numbers for Mar 2001 and Mar 2000
should be $0.35 and 0.33!

The earnings growth number drops from 17% to only 6%!
