I would hope that advancements of any kind would be of benefit to the human race.

This is likely to be determined less by the nature of the advancements than by what we choose to do with them. Science provides tools. We decide what to do with those tools. A tool that is used to advance is not necessarily a better tool than than one used to destroy, just as a hammer that is used to build a house is not a better hammer than a hammer that is used to beat someone's brains out.

It is silly to expect science to make us better people. That's not what science is for.
