Science is just an instrument that offers us options. It can't make us better, although I'm not terribly sure what "better" means anyway. Too often "better" means what benefits me, my family, my community, my state, my country..... and it's a long haul to get to "mankind". THere is certainly nothing wrong with trying to be a better person, but I think that's a different statement than saying "science can make us better people". (I'm not sure who said that- I have sort of gotten everything jumbled together)
Karen's point about how we need to not lose control of the technology is the best reason yet, imo, not to ban cloning research. How we apply the technology, how far we take it, will be another story, but ignorance and avoidance won't solve anything; someone is going to do it, so best done here. Reading this discussion makes me think of Walters' short story, "The Monkey's Paw". We can wish for things with the best of intentions but our perspectives are skewed by our personal needs and desires. Be it magic or science, the choices are still ours how we use the tools. |
