Telefonica Celular Launches CDMA2000 1X High-Speed Data And Voice Network In Brazil With Equipment From Lucent Technologies
New Network to Provide High-Speed Data Transmission to Support New Services And Increase Voice Capacity Substantially

CAMPINAS, Brazil, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Telefonica Celular, one of the largest mobile operators in Brazil, today announced the commercial launch of an advanced CDMA2000(TM) 1X high-speed data and voice network in Brazil using equipment supplied by Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU). The new network will initially serve Telefonica Celular customers in Rio de Janeiro, providing them with data transmission speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps).

These increased speeds, which are made possible by Lucent's mobile network infrastructure equipment, will enable Telefonica Celular to offer its customers advanced services such as video streaming, which makes full-motion video transmission possible, wireless Web browsing and instant messaging. Initially, 25,000 corporate customers in Rio de Janeiro will have access to these new data services.

Lucent upgraded Telefonica Celular's existing Lucent-supplied base stations with CDMA2000 1X channel cards and software, and also provided software upgrades for Telefonica Celular's mobile switching centers to enable these services. Lucent also supplied additional Lucent Flexent(R) base stations. The CDMA2000 1X network can double Telefonica Celular's voice capacity, while also providing data speeds of up to 153 kbps, all using Telefonica's existing radio frequency spectrum.

Telefonica Celular's subscribers will be able to access the high-speed network with CDMA2000 1X-enabled devices or personal digital assistants (PDAs) and laptop PCs equipped with CDMA2000 1X PC cards. The upgraded network is backward compatible so that existing customers will continue to be supported.

"We have been supplying equipment and services to Telefonica Celular in Brazil and several other countries that enable them to offer their customers innovative services," said Renato Furtado, president, Lucent Technologies in Brazil. "The commercial launch of Telefonica Celular's network further demonstrates our CDMA leadership in Brazil and the rest of the world."

CDMA2000 is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being introduced worldwide and an international third-generation (3G) standard established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). CDMA2000 cost-effectively evolves a multitude of network technologies. Lucent is the worldwide leader in spread-spectrum CDMA networks, having deployed more than 60,000 CDMA base stations in commercial networks worldwide.
